Sweet Basil [ ocimum basilicum ]

Sweet Basil is a very easy to grow plant and i was told to start from the seed. However, there is a short cut method to grow lots of sweet basil. You can cut any part from an existing plant and just stick it in the ground, it will grow. Sweet basil is only good for its leaves and the rest are usually trashed. You can pick them for free from any local market and then just stick them a few inches from each other and most will grow, not all.

Great plant, harvestĀ  as it grows and the more you trim it, the more it branches out.

Within 2 weeks, the basil plant will grow and little flower buds can been seen at the tip. If you wish to harvest the best quality basil, do it before the flower bloom. Once the flower bloom, the leaves has a different taste and tend to rot faster.

Composting

Composting is such an easy thing to do and yet many people refuse to do it because they believe compost stinks and dirty. They are so wrong and i have been composting for more than 10 years and i only use the power of the sun and rain to do it.

This is a sample of ground composting i have been using for years which i dig a huge hole about 4 feet deep and i use bricks to prevent the wall from collapsing over. I just throw whatever organic waste, grass clippings or whatever waste from my garden into this deep hole and cover it with some wood i found. Stir it once a while and after a couple of months, you can harvest the compost to fertilize your plants.

I reuse some unwanted water tanks for composting and eventually turning them into vermicompost. Just make sure there are proper outlet at the bottom for water to be released from the tanks just in case heavy rain which will drown your worms, the work force that speed up your compost bin. Lay some compost from another bin at the base as a start and put in a few worms to start this ecosystem. Add all the waste into this bin and make sure you cover it with ventilation hole at the side. Everything will start to break down and within weeks, you get new batches of compost and a big community of earth worm inside.

Canna

This plant mysteriously grew itself near my galanggal plants and i moved it to a large pot. Since then, it has been growing well and flowering on daily basis.

Once the flower dried, these little spiky balls are formed which carries tiny little seeds. A hardy plant and easy to care, these balls of seed will eventually fall all over your garden and start dominating any space given, so beware.
